I’m currently living in Chile, a country with an equally lax attitute to animal welfare. There was a recent case where an animal shelter, which was taking donations from the public, was accused by police of leaving animals to die without food or water. Nobody was ever prosecuted. I was so upset by the number of stray dogs in Santiago, and by this case, that I went to help out at a shelter. I’ve been volunteering on a regular basis since then and it’s been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
