Twitter, the micro-blogging site you hear more about each day, is being used for all sorts of creative purposes. Raising money for a cause is one of them.

As we mentioned earlier this week on MatadorPulse, the micro-blogging website Twitter offers users just 140 characters to communicate what they’re thinking about and what they’re doing… yet they’re finding incredibly creative ways to maximize these bursts of communication.

Matador’s own Honor Dargan (@tokyotopia on Twitter) launched Twitter’s first live travel chat this week along with fellow expat Shane Sakata.

Young people in Moldova used Twitter to send the world real-time updates about a growing political protest.

And now, folks are using Twitter to raise money for a social cause.

Earlier this week, TechCrunch’s MG Siegler reported that web developer and Twitter user Drew Olanoff , who recently learned that he has cancer, has devised a genius way to use Twitter to generate money for cancer research.

Olanoff isn’t the first Twitter user to raise money for a good cause via Twitter, but he may be the most innovative. Olanoff invites people to complain about things that are bothering them on Twitter, using the hash tag– #BlameDrewsCancer– to blame their troubles on… his cancer.

A related website, www.blamedrewscancer.com, aggregates all the “tweets” with the #BlameDrewsCancer tag; for each #BlameDrewsCancer tweet, Olanoff looks for sponsors to donate $1.00 to cancer research.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to #BlameDrewsCancer for the fact that I’m out of coffee.

    Julie,

Check out the ¨tweet to beat¨ campaign run by author Tim Ferriss. http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/2009/03/09/tweet-to-beat/

Also, check out http://libraryforlaos.org/ . Literacy fund raiser that raised money for 6 rural villages in Laos to fund reading programs. Used twitter as its main source of viral marketing!

Its an amazing social fund raising tool! Great post.

Definitely seeing some positive cause related marketing and fundraising coming off of Twitter. One of the major events that caught my attention and raised the bar on twitter and fundraising was Charity:Water & the Twestival campaign.

There was over 200 cities involved in Feb 2009 and it caught the attention of a few celebrities and that got a subsequent special produced on CNN. They raised money for the construction of clean water supplies in developing countries.

Great Post and a great sense of humour on something that is otherwise a tricky life experience.

    Peter
