Then hunt the priates down. That would be risky but its even more of a risk to encourage the priates. The other option is to pay the ransom and hunt them down either way it will send a message. I think that America was right to take out the pirates-- they did have the captain at gunpoint after all. If it had negotiated-- which the US doesn't do, as a rule-- it just would have encouraged the pirates to raid more US ships. I understand the mentality of not wanting to pay the ransom, because that seems to set a precedent and encourage more abductions, but at the same time, killing those three (?) pirates has made the rest out there vow to avenge their deaths, and no longer treat those they abduct very nicely (which apparently on the whole, they had been doing). So it ends up being a vicious circle either way. This is another one of those situations where it is so intermingled on so many levels that you have to change the way society operates as a whole in order for there not to be a need for people to become pirates. However, I would love to see our government take a proactive approach with its great resources like the Navy Seals and other great teams. This is a perfect opportunity to show that we are great at both large scale operations and small scale. And beyond that show of force, we should be defending our citizens wherever they are.
