I’m really glad that you wrote about whats going on in the Favelas. It is especially interesting these days with how the government plans on dealing with all the drug and gang related violence with the approaching Olympic Games.

This projet is a good one. I know a foreign girl who is staying at the Casa CarioKa and helping this favela..It is nice to see people give their time to helping these comunities becae they need help.Great to see people helping us!

Because I am teacher of jiu jitsu and tour guide in Rocinha, I now receive much interest from people who want come stay in Rocinha. In about 3 months I will open a guest house here in Rocinha for people to stay and absorb the culture of my favela.

For anyone interested in a favela volunteer project, Casa Carioka offers accommodation for volunteers and will link them with an organisation in Parque Jardin Beira Mar favela. It will give a completely different perspective of the favela, and one that will hopefully enrich the favela at the same time.

I have become fascinated with Brazil and its favelas. I live in the projects of Brooklyn, and I wish we had the “laws” the way the favelas do.

There was an episode of a TV programme called 'Explore' here in the UK that filmed and interviewed some people in an slum in Argentinia. The taxi driver wouldn't drop them anywhere near it but when they got there it all seemed pretty quiet with everyone just getting on with their lives. Quite a contradiction to outsiders perceptions. The people they met weren't hostile at all. You did get the impression that they felt ignored and just wanted some help to improve the conditions. Reminded me of a council estate I used to live on where there were a few stabbings and shootings and quite a lot of dealing going on. It never worried me at the time and life wasn't so bad. Just finding out about cost. If it's reasonable I'll be adding the tour to my list of things to do while in Brazil.
