The concept is amazing. I've funded loans through Kiva for a couple years. Keep in mind that you can help fund a loan with a small amount too ( I think they start at a $25 contribution ). I remember being on a business trip and reading about Kiva saved my whole day. I was exhausted at an airport and about in tears and picked up a magazine and learned about the organization. I'd say the "wait-until-later" mindset is used by people to postpone volunteer activities as well.
