It was endemic here in Michigan (which had lots of swamps) before air conditioning, screens on windows, insect repellant and urbanization. It is false to say that global warming has increased it; there is no reason it should. There has also been no observed increase in the intensity or number of violent typhoons, cyclones or hurricanes.
