great article, this sounds like it would be an amazing thing to do, but how would you go about finding a tribe? I know you had mentioned staying with different people of the world and I was curious as to which you enjoyed the most or which you were able to connect with the most

Thanks for getting back to me! Im really interesting in traveling Asia or Austrailia. A friend of mine went to Asia backpacking and from the pictures ive seen and the stories it sounds like the trip of a lifetime! I might not be able to go this year, but i just really want to find out how to find people to possibly travel with.

Hi, Fiona- Thanks for your comment. Where are you based and where would you like to travel? There are lots of group travel options, but it helps to know where you're headed.

Hi, i am determined to go traveling but I dont know how to get started? None of my friends are very interested so I was wondering if you get groups of people going traveling or something like the charity treks? I would love to just set off on my own but as an 18 year old girl i dont think that is very wise! If anyone has any information that would be great? thank you!

Nice article Ross.
Local communities world wide are being innudated by tourists now and it's more important than ever that we act responsibly.
However I agree with Tim, giving gifts (not just candy) can start a dangerous precedent to future travelers. If you'd like to give, the best way is throught the village chief of eqivalent so people don't make the connection between tourists= gifts and the transition into begging can come swiftly. While it's nice to help I'm sure everyone has experienced this- a real shame when we only have the best of interests at heart.

Solid article Ross, nice job. My only issue is with your suggestion to give the kids candy - they may not get Jolly Ranchers, but they don't get toothpaste either. Maybe it's not a huge deal, but a few tastes of processed candy could be unhealthy and make the kids want to trek out of the jungle and find the source...

Got any blogs about your hill tribe experience in N. Thailand?

Great article, not only for visiting indigenous communities, but for "going local" anywhere. Loved the photos as well.
